- 17th November 2011: Using Drama to Tackle Hate Crime
Hundreds and thousands of visitors who attended the Community Showcase in Central Park on Sunday 12th September had the chance to view some rather special performances around the issues of Hate Crime and Hate Incidents.
Drama based learning specialists, Silvercube performed a number of small plays around some of the everyday occurrences and conversations that might happen in either the work place or on the street showing how some people can be targeted and discriminated against because of their religion, disability, race or sexual orientation.
The project was set up by the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership in a bid to address the whole issue of the 'under reporting' of Hate Crime, and incidences.
After each performance the facilitator for Silvercube, Mike Sengelow, discussed with the crowds who watched the performances the issues they had witnessed in the shows and then encouraged them to complete a Hate Crime Survey giving the Community Safety Partnership their views on why they think Hate Crime and Hate Incidents are so under reported and what they think will encourage more victims to come forward for either support or advice if they themselves become a victim.
Peter Hunn, Principal Community Safety Officer, said on the day, "This is the first time we have used drama based learning to help us either promote a community safety project or deliver a key message the partnership wants to get out in the public arena and from the feedback we have received today and from the amount of completed hate crime questionnaires we have had returned to us it is definitely something we will use again in the future".
Peter Hunn also added, "We ran small plays throughout the day surrounding the issues of Ageism, Disability, Sexuality and Ethnicity and at times it was difficult to believe someone would actually do or say some of the things we witnessed in the plays. However, Silvercube did an excellent job in creating the plays and making them as realistic as possible. These were conversations that could be happening right now in your work area or in the pub you visit. It might even have been you who has witnessed a conversation like this or has been subjected to something similar yourself. Our message is simple: Hate crime and hate incidences must be stopped. Let us help you to stop it forever."
